The library collection is extensive and varied, and intended to provide materials for every member of Bearsden Academy. Both fiction and non-fiction cover a wide range of themes, genres, topics and reading levels to meet the needs of students and staff, and the curriculum.

Collections in the library are divided into those appropriate for everyone and senior collections. Senior collections contain materials with content more suitable for older readers. Students in S1-S3 can borrow from Senior Collections with parent/guardian permission. Permission forms can be requested from the school librarian.

The library has an extensive eBook collection which has an immersive reader function with audio, language, and text display options.

All Bearsden Academy pupils are automatically members of the school library. They can borrow up to 3 physical items and 2 eBooks at one time. Books, Magazines, DVDs, and Study Guides can be borrowed for a period of three weeks and can be renewed for another three weeks unless someone else has requested it.

All students are encouraged to read for enjoyment, and students can make suggestions of books or materials that they would like to have in the library.

The school library has an online library catalogue.

The catalogue and library eBooks can be accessed from anywhere with an internet connection. The library catalogue can be used to find what books, magazines, DVDs, and study guides that the library has physically and electronically.

Each student and staff member has their own personal library account to search for books online and access the library’s eBooks. Students are provided their account details from the school librarian. Anyone having issues accessing their library account should see the librarian to request help.

The library subscribes to 2 online databases, The Day and Issues Online. These databases contain information and statistics on important social issues and current affairs. The information can help support pupils with discursive essays, debating topics, class talks and school projects. Pupils can access these databases from their Glow account in school, at home or on their mobile. How to log in is included in the Glow title for the database.

A careers collection is situated within the library and contains a range of information on universities and colleges, career guides and information on how to apply for work.

Each S1 and S2 class have one library period with their English teacher every 2 weeks. S3 classes have one library period per month. The students have this time to choose their personal reading books, read in the library, and discuss their books with their peers, their teacher and the school librarian. Help is given to students to choose appropriate books for their level and interests.

S1 students receive a library induction at the start of the academic year. Students learn how to use the library, where to find information and how to evaluate, use and communicate it.

Bearsden Academy was awarded the Silver Reading Schools Award from the Scottish Book Trust. Reading Schools is an accreditation programme for schools that are committed to building a reading culture for their students and communities. Research proves that reading for pleasure is central in supporting equity and wellbeing, positively impacting learners' attainment across the curriculum, critical thinking, creativity, empathy and resilience.

Students participate in events such as Book Week Scotland, National Poetry Day, and World Book Day.

Bearsden Academy participates in the National Reading Champions Quiz run annually by the National Literacy Trust. In 2022 and 2023 the school team made it to the final in London. A quiz is designed by the school librarian to determine the four students who will make up the school team.

The library has Instagram (@BearsdenAcademyLibrary) and Twitter (@BearsdenLibrary), run by the school librarian, which are used to post book recommendations and information about library activities.

The library runs several book clubs during lunch times and after school, including a Graphic Novel Book Club and a Mystery Book Club.

There is also a book club dedicated to the Carnegie Medal, where the participating students read the books nominated for the award that year and choose their favourite. The Bearsden Mock Carnegie Book Club also participates in Shadowing for the Carnegie Medal, sending reviews, artwork, and votes for the shortlisted books to the committee who vote for the official Carnegie Medal.

As well as book clubs there are other one off events and activities for special occasions, for example Black Out Poetry day to celebrate poetry month, Geography Quizzes, an Earth Day party, and an ongoing craft club after school on Thursdays.

To inspire pupils to read and encourage writing, the library organises author visits. Authors who have visited Bearsden in recent years include Martin Stewart, Barry Hutcheson, Victoria Williamson, Cailean Steed, and Matt Oldfield.

The library has two volunteering programs that S5 and S6 students can participate in. Volunteers will be given training and time volunteering in these programs can count towards a volunteering award or qualification.

Paired Reading: Run in conjunction with the English department, S5 and S6 volunteers will be paired with a S1 or S2 pupil to meet 15 minutes per week to read together. Paired reading helps students work together, encourages cooperation and supports peer-assisted learning. It raises attainment in younger students and provides experience for senior students. It is especially useful for senior students considering careers in childcare or education.

Library assistants: S5 and S6 students can volunteer one day a week, either during a free period, lunchtime, or after school to help with the running of the library. Tasks may include; re-shelving books, helping with social media or author visits, or helping with an activity for young students.
